Conjuctivitis
Conjunctiva is the thin clear tissue which lies over the white part of the eye and forms lining of the inside of the eyelid; its inflammation is known as conjunctivitis.
Causes
Viruses (most common)
Bacteria
Irritants like shampoos, dust, smoke, swimming pool
chlorine, etc.
Allergens like dust, pollens, contact lens allergies.
Spread
It is contagious, spreads form person to person
through direct/indirect contact.
Symptoms
Redness in eyes, swelling of eyelids
Watering from eyes
Yellow, greenish or white discharge form eyes.
Blurred vision
Itching or burning sensation in eyes
Increased sensitivity and discomfort to light.
How to prevent spread of infection?
Good hygiene is very important. It will help in preventing the catching of infection.
- Wash hands frequently with soap & water.
- Avoid touching your eyes & face.
- Do not share towels, handkerchief, etc.
- Do not share cosmetics.
- Throw the contact lenses worn during infection.
- Patient should take rest and avoid socializing or going to school before recovery.
- Change pillow covers frequently.
- Clean eye discharge and crust with cotton dipped in warm water and wash hands thoroughly.
Treatment
- Ophthalmologist is the eye specialist to be consulted for all eye problems.
- Antibiotic eye drops are prescribed for bacterial infections.
- Viral infections are mostly self resolving, in some cases oral antiviral therapy might be given.
- Usually it takes 4 to 7 days to heal; in case of complications specialist should be approached promptly.
